Default Philippine flood victims lose hope as storm nears

09:45 02Dec2004 RTRS-Philippine flood victims lose hope as storm nears

REAL, Philippines Dec 2 (Reuters) - The tides of mud carved a random
trail of destruction through Philippine towns, robbing already impoverished
residents of children, houses and hope.
Hundreds scrambled through the mud on Thursday to reach higher ground to
seek some protection from nature's next assault, powerful Typhoon Nanmadol
whose rains were already falling.
"I hope the typhoon veers away," said an old woman, walking with her
teenage son near the town of Infanta, one of three coastal towns where more
than 300 people died in landslides triggered by heavy rains on Monday.
"We will all die here. We don't have food and water and we lost some of
our relatives in landslides," she said.
Television showed dozens of overturned vehicles, some buried in
waist-deep mud, as hundreds of residents clutching a few belongings hiked to
what they hoped was safer ground.
Soldiers who finally reached Infanta after trudging for hours across
submerged roads and broken bridges found most of the town covered with
chocolate-coloured mud.
Huge boulders blocked the main roads and a pile of corpses lay on
makeshift stretchers covered with plastic sacks.
"This is the first time that Infanta has experienced this kind of
calamity. Not just one but all of the 36 villages are submerged in mud,"
said Infanta Mayor Filipina Amerika.
In nearby Real, where more than 100 died, a small group of residents
gathered around soldiers digging into a pile of loosened earth, clinging to
hope for a miracle.
"I lost my son," a sobbing Reynaldo Sinaga told Reuters. "It doesn't
matter even if he is dead, as long as we can recover his body."
His 18-year-old son went out with a friend on Monday night to buy food
and never returned.
Sinaga learned from neighbours that the pair could have been buried
alive when cascading water, mud and boulders crashed into the town's flimsy
homes.
"I won't leave here until I see his body," he said, sitting at the end
of a road as heavy rains started to fall.
