Avbrief radar-MO radar
 

The latest echos on the radars are different. The Met shows precip
just curling up towards Dover and Avbrief shows nothing there. I have
noticed this a few times over the last few days.
Is it worth paying for AV when The MO is better even though 15 mins
behind?

I have also noticed this Mark!

The different radars are showing different echos and Im not really sure what
to belive! When its been precipitating here and I look at avbrief
20mins/30mins after it often lacks any return for the time it was
precipitating outside!

It isn't a case of "better" or "worse", this is a problem that needs
to be reported to Avbrief so they can get it fixed!

The two radar images were essentially identical at 21:30, except that:

1) as usual, avbrief is showing patches of lighter rain than the Met
Office radar - especially in the English Midlands

2) the avbrief image seems to be cut off on the English side of the
Dover Straits instead of going across to the French coast.

This looks like either an error in the data feed provided by the Met
Office (which as Jon has pointed out before, is a different feed from
the one used on the Met Office website); or a processing error at
Avbrief itself.

Either way, the problem needs to be reported to Avbrief! They respond
fairly quickly to problem reports and get them fixed fairly quickly in
my experience.

I haven't got access to the Avbrief data so am not sure exactly what the
problem is, or if there genuinely is one as the above appears consistent
with my previous understanding of how the two data feeds differ. AFAIK the
Avbrief data comes straight from Nimrod/Radarnet, whereas the data on the
MetO site goes through a different route and is processed differently (1).
This data includes the composite data from the continental radars, whereas
the Avbrief data doesn't, hence the cut off you mention (2).

It will be interesting to see if anything changes in March when RadarnetIV
becomes operational, at least provisionally.
