When ice becomes an artist
I am sure I have sent you a couple of pictures with ice by a lake shore;
today, I came across some more, this time from the lake of Ioannina, in NW Greece (January 2004): http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-007f.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-008f.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-009f.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-021s.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-025s.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-027s.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-028s.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-030s.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-031s.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-032s.jpg http://www.enl.auth.gr/temp/mvc-033f.jpg Yannis, SE Athens +8.7C, RH 75%, SLP 1014.6 hPa http://2004.e-kairos.gr/march.html http://2004.e-kairos.gr/april.html |

I suspect a series of frreze-thaw days/nights are the cause with snow melt being the agent for freezing. What height above sea level is it ? ATB, Joe |

Fantastic images Yannis, can you give us a description of past weather
events here ? I suspect a series of frreze-thaw days/nights are the cause with snow melt being the agent for freezing. What height above sea level is it ? Ioannina is a semi-mountainous town at an altitude of ca 600 m asl. The ice in the pictures was produced by high winds that caused the lake water 'wash' already frozen surfaces outside of the lake and freeze instantly upon coming to contact with them -if I got your question correctly. The town of Ioannina itself didn't see much snow this year until January 30th (strange town snow wise because of the big mountain range to its east), so I doubt that the ice was the outcome of snow that was freezing and remelting. I can recheck the info for you though! The pictures must have been taken on January 23rd or 24th when temperatures were quite a few degrees below 0C throughout most of the country. The lake water wash onto already frozen surfaces looks correct to me. We
sometimes see ice like this here, before the lakes freeze over, of course. I am impressed to know that any part of Greece has cold such as this. In that case, may I suggest a visit to http://www.e-kairos.gr/records.html (the left column shows what most foreigners are unaware of, the record LOW temperatures; note that Florina reached -29C reached in 1996 and that various locations have record low temperatures in the -20s). I am trying to keep this page up-to-date with all breaking records. Yannis, SE Athens +12.5C, RH 49%, SLP 1020.0 hPa http://2004.e-kairos.gr/april.html |
