Default West Cornwall, More severe & MUCH more exciting today!

Yesterday was a bit of a damp squid here. There was just a gale (in exposed spots) the swell was around 6m (which it can reach in summer) though sea conditions were clearly very rough. Maximum gust in Penzance (sheltered from the WSW) just 43mph, and 68mph (a typical winter figure) at Land's End. I couldn't find anywhere locally that hit 70mph. The gust 60mph were in places that basically don't have trees, for a very good reason.

On top of those unexceptional figures it was a mainly dry day, around 0.5mm during daylight hours, with bursts of weak sunshine through a salt spray sky.

MUCH more exciting today. 80mph gusts at Lands End, 75mph at St Ives, 50mph in Penzance. Swell 7-8m at Sevenstones, still not that large (11m has a 5 year return period - 8m occurs a few times each year) but it is VERY VERY rough.

The most exciting part is we've had 3 thunderstorms so far since dawn..
1. (9:45-10:00) dropped 10mm in a very short space of time, several flashes..
2. (11:00) Brief but the 1st directly overhead flas for a few years.
3. (12:3)) Distant rumbles.

So a much better day on the excitement front today. Currently (13:30) rain & hail and quite violent gusts.

This is more like it!

Graham
