Default April Temperature Record - Penzance

Now 22.4C in Penzance, highest April temperature since at least 1991.

The air must be incredibly stable, as some of the hottest spots late morning were on the exposed parts of the coast.
E.g
St Catherines Point 22C
Newquay 22C
Penzance 22C
Plymouth 23C
Shoreham Airport 23C
Even Lands End airport 21C

Many places inland were actually cooler
E.g Yeovelton 20C
Even places in the SE near London were no warmer.

Very surprising given the SST.

Yes, there's a very low inversion at the moment. SW England benefits from the lack of land track giving reduced nighttime cooling, plus the fact that it is relatively hilly which means that many locations poke up through the inversion and nocturnally cooled layer and warm up quickly - and the hills help mix the air from above the inversion downwards. Other places don't have one or more of these factors - and also, if you have a long land track then the base of the inversion tends to be higher anyway owing to increased friction generating more in the way of turbulent mixing of the nocturnally cooled layer.

A maximum of 24.0C yesterday and 24.9C today. High but nowhere near my
April record set on the 23rd in 2011 with 26.8C. Unusually, there was no
sea breeze, which explains the high temperature.

Very low RH% with 34% this afternoon.

With the sun now over 50°, it has started to take on the super-strong
feel and the UV levels creeping up ever quicker now. I suspect there
will be quite a few badly sunburnt holiday-makers this Easter.
