Some prolonged sunshine along the coasts of the far SW this moring, following yesterday afternoon's sunshine, when I posted apicture of the clear blue sky on Weather & Climate https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=...te/QSZgP3xAqrw
Cloud developing quickly inland this morning, but mainly to the east of Penzance, so fairly sunny even over the nearby moors at Bosullow (4 miles NW of Penzance) http://www.greatbosullow.net/Graphtext1.png A lovely day to be on the beach https://www.atlanticcottageholidays....m-sennen-cove/ Far more sun here of late than the forecast has suggested. It's the sunny on windward coast springlike conditions. Hope the frontal cloud holds off for a few more hours, it may not. Graham Penzance |

Graham Penzance The sunshine has continued, prolonged on onshore coasts, & not bad even on top of the moors http://www.greatbosullow.net/Graphtext1.png Cloud increasing now though, still it's good to have a couple of days sunnier than forecast. Graham Penzance No sun here at all - 8 oktas very uniform stratus all day and a max of only 8.9°C. Terrible waste of a big High. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, NE Surrey, 557 ft, 170 m. |

We were rather lucky, as the satellite imagery showed. Didn't stop the forecast saying the best of any brightness would be in the lee of high ground once again. They do like their cliches. Camborne was the 'official' sunniest place in the SW yesterday with 7.2 hours, it was nearer 9 hours right on the coast. What was interesting was the distinct sea breeze convergence creating a line of cloud up the Lizard despite the air temperature only being around 13C and the air being fairly stable. That helped keep the coasts sunny, as any cloud over the sea tended to disperse as it reached the descending part of the sea breeze circulation. The frontal cloud is very thin at present, still some bursts of sunshine with a noticeable F3 NE breeze, no sea breeze circulation today. Plenty of sunshine for you as the high rebuilds. Tudor Hughes writes No sun here at all - 8 oktas very uniform stratus all day and a max of only 8.9°C. Terrible waste of a big High. The fact that most of the sunshine hours for the UK locations listed in the Daily Telegraph are "estimated" values rather than actual readings really annoys me. They are often so wildly wrong that they must be derived directly from computer modelling rather than by interpolation or extrapolation from actual readings at nearby locations. Yesterday was a case in point, with Farnborough stated to be the sunniest place in the UK with 6.6 hours. That seemed vanishingly unlikely, and of course it was an estimated reading. The actual reading for Basingstoke, which can only be 10-15 miles away, was 0.0. -- John Hall "Hegel was right when he said that we learn from history that man can never learn anything from history." Graham Penzance A hole in the cloud over the far SW again this morning, very pleasant out in the sunshine. The satellite imagery for the last 2 or 3 hours shows it very well. We've obviously done something to please the weather Gods. Some pics of yesterdays glorious sunshine which somehow penetrated the forecast cloud & drizzle for the far SW. https://www.old-boathouse.com/acatalog/Diary.html A forecast which still persists. No low cloud based Cu/Stratus over the moors today, just thin medium / high level frontal cloud which has had limited impact on the sun. http://www.greatbosullow.net/Graphtext1.png Graham Penzance |

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) I agree with you (though Camborne is 1 of the few genuine reasons.) The result of the computer generated stuff to replace actual observations, produces some ridiculous output to my mind. If you take air frosts, an average for a location can be 0.5 for the month, but the actual can never be this. So it's perfectly reasonable for the actual map for a month to show an isofrost (not sure what the real word would be!) of 1 , 5, 10, etc., but not of 0.5 which is what the monthly actual frost maps show. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate...aries/anomacts Graham Penzance |
