I've not contributed as much on here of late, more so on the Google
Group. But there is overlap and I know some of you will have known Ron
Button, who sadly died yesterday. Like me Ron was one of the original
conributors to USW in the very early days.
I know one or two of you knew him personally, or as a regular on here.
In fact that was where I first got to know him and then helped him to
set up his AWS to replace his ageing Davis one. Of course having the
Woodford Wells Weather web site and a computerised data system was great
fun for him. Nevertheless he still maintained his daily weather diary
and has daily weather records going back to the fifties or before I
believe :-) In these last ten years we frequently had lunch together
and enjoyed chats about the weather and other topics, many of which we
didn't agree upon!
Hopefully, apart from his in depth knowledge of past weather events, you
will remember him for his dry wit and his fatherly ability to not get
involved with some of the less pleasant goings on at USW and the ability
to lessen the tension and get things back on track, usually with some
sharp but witty remark.
He was only diagnosed with a brain tumour a couple of weeks ago and up
until Christmas, before he started to become ill, he was probably the
brightest, liveliest, most active man I have ever met in his mid
eighties and I will miss my chats with a classic "old school" amateur
weather enthusiast very much,
Dave

Thanks for the information Dave, that's very sad news.
Ron was a wonderful and positive contributor to these pages and will be sadly missed.
In this internet age, it's a very positive thing to have had someone like him to become part of the newsgroup family.
Never knew him, never met him, but a good friend on here.

Very sad news. I corresponded with Ron occasionally over the years and
finally got to meet him face-to-face at Philip Eden's funeral. A lovely
man with an excellent wit and whose glass always seemed to be half
full. I shall miss our correspondence.

Hi,Dave,
Like you I do not post much these days but this is bad news indeed - thank you so much for letting us know. I met Ron a couple of times and found him a lovely man, one of the old school of observers.

I first met Ron, some 20 years ago, at a COL meeting. He was the nearest
'weather enthusiast' to my Epping weather station. We would meet up
regularly to put the weather world to rights, otherwise it would be
regular messages often along the lines of 'you got any snow yet'. A very
pleasant man indeed with some fine anecdotes of his younger days at
school in East London (or was it SW Essex?) in the 1940's as well as
memories of winter 1947. I believe Ron started working at the Met Office
after leaving school before going into business.

A real gent. RIP Ron.

Like everyone else, I'm very sad to hear this. I knew Ron only as a member of this group, but always enjoyed reading his good-humoured contributions. Thank you, Ron, for being one of us.
