Yesterday's weather
 

The max of 4.6° here yesterday was the lowest October daily max that I
have recorded in the 10 years that I have been in Tideswell. The
previous lowest was 5.9° on 20th Oct 2010. Also, yesterday was the
first time that I have recorded snow falling in Tideswell in October in
my 10 years here. A notable day!

If you had been there two year's previously then you would've seen both snow and a lower maximum. My site was in Bayston Hill, Shropshire, at the time and I recorded two snow days and maxima of 5.5 and 5.0 on the two days. It was a similar situation to Friday/Saturday, with a cold cyclonic northerly. Leek recorded a maximum of 3.1 - and that's not too far from you. Maximum here of 9.4C actually occurred just before 09:00 today. It still made it the lowest maximum in my 28 year record, beating 9.6C in 2008. Most of yesterday it was between 5 & 7C, the rain/hail & wind making it feel really bleak.

9.5mm fell during the dangler yesterday (starting around 06:00). It seemed like much more.

Today's convergence zone has now retreated off Lands End. A welcome return to clear blue skies & sunshine in the last hour or so. Still quite windy though.

Yes, I don't doubt that there have been colder Ocober days than
yesterday. 10 years of recording is hardly definitive.

I have tried to locate any weather data for Tideswell before 2009 but
haven't had any success. The nearest I can find is Buxton. The site
there is 5.8 miles SW of here and only 4 metres higher. The immediate
exposure is a bit different being a bit more towny but it is in a very
similar broadscale situation. I should think the data from there will
be reasonably representative. Leek is a bit further away, 13.4 miles
SW, but it is at a similar altitude being only 5 metres lower than
here. Nevertheless, the broadscale exposure is very different. I think
it will be much less representative of Tideswell than Buxton is.

The Met Office Monthly Weather Report (available from the NMLA digital
site) contains monthly data for Buxton from October 1907 right up until
the MWR ceased publication at the end of 1993. I'm currently putting
all of the Buxton data into a spreadsheet. Once I've done with the MWR
data I'll see if I can get hold of the data since 1993 from the local
council office in Buxton. An ongoing project!

Earliest snowfall in my Epping records (1979-2013) was 27/10/2012 (am).

I've been recording in Chiswell gree, St Albans since 2002. The only day
with a lower maximum temperature than the 6.7° recorded on 27/10/18 was
5.3° on the 29/10/2008. No snow seen though but a notable day; in may
Octobers the maximum temperature during the day is above 10° throughout the
month.
