Takes a bit longer to get down here Ken, but duly arrived overnight, just a dusting, but light snow falling most of the day.

Ken I'm assuming you keep a record of "first snow" in your rarified atmosphere - when the average date for you?

David, I think it was just a taster – only the third October since I moved here in 1995 that has seen snow lying.

Richard, I keep a note of first and last frosts but not snow. However, your post has stirred me to make a start – could take a while though as grandchildren have just about taken over here!

Gordon Manley, who knew a bit about Teesdale weather, was convinced that Consett – just up the road and same altitude- was the snowiest urban community in Britain.
The Met Office also seems convinced that Copley has the highest number of snow falling days of their sites in England and 5th in UK – nothing to do with me I just send the obs. in!

There might be room for some work here and I’ll let you know. Meanwhile, a very rough estimate would be average first snow falling 10th November, first with more than half cover at 09Z 25th November. Last falling 25th April, last more than half cover at 09Z 25th March.
Since 1995 average annual days falling are 57.7, lying more than half cover 31.5, fresh falls at 09Z 83.2cm

Copley Lead Mill (not standard exposure) 41.3 days lying

There could be another interesting study to compare snowfalls here with my old MetO site at Low Etherley (155m asl) 1971 – 1995. Annual stats there were, falling 52.1, lying 31.7, fresh 76.0cm

In Tideswell, since 2009, the average annual days falling is 50 and
more than half-cover lying is 28. I don't keep stats on earliest/latest
dates but I might have a look at that.

Ken, I observed 3 days with snow lying in Yorkshire in October between 1992 and 2016. Sorry, don't have access to years, but all were 30 or 31st October, 2 in Penistone and 1 in Langtoft, each event was fairly widespread.
This is our third Autumn here and we have had a fall by the end of the first week in November each year so far.

Now that I’ve finished the spreadsheet, I can’t believe how close those rough estimates were! (1996 - 2018)
Average dates:- First falling 10th November, first more than half cover 28th November. Last falling 22nd April, last more than half cover 23rd March.
