I'm pretty sure the event that I recall was in April and was unlikely
to be 1975 as I wasn't in London then. It seems that we're probably talking about different events. I could have sworn it was Good Friday 1975 but checking my diaries I recorded 15 to 20 cms falling on the 27th March 1975, which was a Thursday. Now my mind is playing tricks on me. To make matters worse I have a photo from the local sentinel newspaper attached to the weather page which clearly shows deep snow with the headline 'Easter 1975 in Hanley (our City centre) after snowstorm' My diary does go on to report snow showers, some heavy following well into April (up to the 10th). More famously of course was the snow event on June 2nd 1975 when we also had snow. Didn't London have snow lying in 2013? There must have been a fair bit then, we had a blizzard on the 22nd March, We had around 25 to 30 cms lying at 09.00 on Saturday 23rd with deep drifts blocking a number of roads! I don't know about London, but in my part of Surrey we didn't have any lying snow at all that month. I was living in South London in 1978/9 and there was definitely heavy snow one April, a good 3 inches. I'm fairly certain it would have been 1978 as I was in Tooting then.

Hi Graham
We did have snow lying in March 2013 up here in Hampstead (mainly towards the end of the month) but nothing lay in central London |

I think Graham is right. It was the Thursday because, thinking about it, we must have sung the Passion on Good Friday
I wonder whether there were any accumulations in central London though (we had about 2-3 inches in Elstree south herts) |

![]() We did have snow lying in March 2013 up here in Hampstead (mainly towards the end of the month) but nothing lay in central London That surprises me, I just assumed it was widespread snow from around the 22nd. It was our equal coldest March on record with 1960, it had a mean temp of 1.8c The first 8 days were quite mild we didn't get any snow until late on the 9th. From the 9th to the 31st there was 20 snow falling and 14 snow lying days, the most ever for March here (1960-2018). Graham |
