uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

For any 05 Oct, 2018 was 270,000 sq km less than any other ,
seemingly racing away in deficit

For any 06 Oct, 2018 was less by 324,000 sq km, previously set in 2016

Still record minimum in the satellite era for any 09 October.
From Charctic extent , Arctic+Antarctic
2016 previous minimum 23,365 million
2018 23,125
so deficit of 240,000 sq km

With Antarctic sea-ice loss rate racing away at maybe the steepest rate
at this time of year.
Global sea-ice , on-the-day , of 28 Dec 2018 returned to record minimum
for any 28 Dec of any year of the satellite era, just , by 31,000 sq km.
Using Charctic algorithm

You have to go back to 1988 for the Antarctic end of calendar year rate
of sea-ice loss for much the same loss-rate, starting from a much higher
level of course, 2018 marginally more steep than 1988.

Default [CC] Global Sea Ice at record low

For any 29 Dec new record low of global sea-ice extent, deficit of
162,000 sq km. Antarctic melt racing away when it should be tailing off
and in a couple of days Arctic sea-ice will also likely have a record
low level for that day of any year, currently only 69,000 over the
previous on-that-day low in 2016 .

Racing away 274,000 sq km sea-ice extent deficit for any 30 Dec of the
satellite era, record minimum.
Tied ,near enough, minimum Arctic sea ice for any 30 Dec, so the end of
2018 will show record minimum for any end of year in both the Arctic and
the Antarctic, and the Antarctic curve hardly showing any wish to tail
off - anyone wish to celebrate that?

Correction
The global record minimum holds up, but the "all-time" Arctic minimum
was 30 Dec 2017, so still 127,000 sq km above that.

Perhaps a "Y2K" problem with
http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/ch...sea-ice-graph/
the bloatware floats thru, but zero primarycontent , unless the third
browser is now not working for that source, my other 2 browsers never
worked with the latest incarnation. No update.

Tailing off a bit perhaps, global sea-ice extent
31 Dec 2018 new on-this-day record deficit of 333,000 sq km wrt previous
minimum on 2016 31 Dec
01 Jan 2019 deficit of 299,000 sq km wrt previous of 2017 01 Jan

Some recent commentary on the state of sea-ice
https://grist.org/article/antarctic-...s-melt-season/

For 03 Jan , 2019 record deficit of -179,000 sq km

GFS and Charctic are still outputting, despite Trump, but NOAA OSPO SST
anomaly plots are not
