It is a long time, summer or winter since we have had high winds and constant heavy rain for several hours here in Essex although we have had both separately. Temperature around 9C most of morning and 17mm. Heating just crept on briefly as inside temp fell below 20C. Pretty chilly as well as windy and very wet. Don't tell Will, but I've turned my central heating on. I don't mind a dry cold, but damp cold is particularly unpleasant. Sequence of hot weather at the end of May followed by cool, wet weather in June is typical for the European Monsoon. Yes. This would seem to be an exceptionally early onset, as IRC mid to late June is more typical, usually coinciding with Wimbledon, Royal Ascot and the Glastonbury festival. -- John Hall "Think wrongly if you please, but in all cases think for yourself." Scott W writes From this chart you could say that the nation is depressed https://twitter.com/wanstead_meteo/s...39602370084864 If one was to work out the total amount of water deposited on the UK based on the heaviness and extent of the rain, I wonder if the figure would be close to record-breaking for June. -- John Hall "Think wrongly if you please, but in all cases think for yourself." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/weat...0ft-waves.html (2012 report) Yesterday, there was no rain here after 09:00, the strongest gust was 39mph (which is so insignificant I can't be bothered to put in any strongest gust list.) Even at Land's End the strongest gust was 49mph. It was also fairly sunny, 6hours even up over the moors. The swell yesterday was not big off Cornwall. Yes the sea was very rough, but the actual swell struggled to reach 10'at Sevenstones http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=62107 20' (significant wave height) can occur even in Summer, and swells around 15' are fairly common all year, often combined with sunny weather here - as they are setup by near stationary depressions in mid Atlantic. (It'll almost certainly be into the teens Sat/Sun). All this doesn't prevent the appalling wave height forecasts we tend to get from the MetO, which still seem largely based on local weather - if not they should just use some decent model output or just use MagicSeaweed like anyone with sense. All this with a weather warning, but the previous day was far worse. It rained all day with the wind gusting to 60mph. It also created some problems with yachts dragging their anchors over on Scilly, sadly http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-40170199. I remember David Braine saying on the early evening forecasts that winds could increase to 60mph. That had already happened, the severe stuff was over - even at Land's End as the the unremarkable strongest gust for Tuesday (49mph) shows. Tuesday you could sit out of the wind with an icecream in the sun. Monday was the bad day. This morning http://www.sennen-cove.com/harbourcam.htm Some places clearly warranted a warning, here it covered completely the wrong period. Graham Penzance |

Last June in the SE wasn't exactly June of the century either (it is pretty poor to get less than half the sunshine of the Shetland islands). There was definitely one day last June where it rained all day and there were significant swathes of standing water across some of the minor roads. It is funny though, that within a fortnight we have had two lots of back to back soaking wet days, with a rainfall quantity that the previous nine months has completely failed to deliver (in my part of Sussex at least). |

Oh yay, another crap start to the meteorological summer, the only thing more grotty was the bridge on Tuesday evening. It is just October/November in June but with more daylight and a bit warmer, although I have experienced wet days in November that were probably a similar temperature to Monday. I was grateful for the rain as my allotment received a useful soil moisture top-up, my water butts were empty and I'd sown some carrots and plated out leeks, which will have been nicely watered in now. |
