That is impressive, what would cause those temperatures in the first
half of March? Strong warm advection from the Sahara?

It's air originating near the equator.

I don't get that. I didn't think the equatorial regions got quite that
hot, I visualised it was around 27-30C daytime peak all year round. How
do you get 32C at Tenerife with advection from near the equator?
Tenerife is surrounded by water less than 20C at this time of year.
Unless there is some significant downslope wind from the mountains I
don't see how 32C can be reached. Hence why I thought it was caused by
advection from the Sahara and a relatively short passage over water.
Same question for Spain, how is the air getting that warm? Foehn winds?

I did do a trajectory analysis and the air came from the equator and not the
Sahara. It was moist air with 850 hPa temps 15C. Local heating at Teneriffe
and Spain can easily give temperatures in the low 30s provided that the wind is
not directly onshore. Teneriffe is mountainous and yes strong foehns can occur.
I know places in Devon a few miles from the coast that can reach 28C easily in
summer. Ditto above for Spain where 1000-500 thickness was 564 Dam which can
easily give temperatures in the low 30s with insolation.

850mb temperature is often the key, coupled with strong sunshine giving a dry
adiabatic lapse rate from 850mb to ground level. As a very rough rule of thumb,
under strong sunshine the ground level max will be approximately 12°C higher
than the 850mb temp.

30°C is infrequent but not unusual in summer in southern UK, without any foehn
effect and in an island surrounded by water that is mostly below 20°C.

I heard somewhere that Alicante not only beat it's March maximum, but it
would have also beat April, had it occured a month later.

Ok, I sort of see it now. So what happens is humid air with high 850mb
temps is advected north. As the air moves north, its relative humidity
drops, which reduces cloudiness, allowing strong solar heating of the
ground. This strong heating dries the air further and results in a deep
convective boundary layer with a dry adiabatic lapse rate, something
like you get over the Sahara. Is this the correct interpretation, or am
I way off?
