Cornwall - Third big thunderstorm in 15 hours.
 

After yesterday afternoon's storm (flooding near Truro) and yesterday's early evening storm (15mm in Penzance, 30mm reported at Redruth) came this mornings storm (around 03:00-04:00), with loads more lightning.

It's no unusual to get 3 showers with a flash of lightning within 24 hours in winter, but to have 3 separate (as opposed to immediate following cells) impressive storms in such a short space of time is.

Yesterday, when it was dry it was pretty dark, misty, gloomy, and very cool in the afternoon.

Max temp 18.7C (at 09:00 today)
Min Temp 16.6C (mid afternoon yesterday.

Total rainfall in Penzance 25.6mm, of which approx 15mm fell in 40mins commencing 19:00 yesterday.

Plenty of pictures on the web of people enjoying the 'heatwave' in Cornwall yesterday. (It certainly wasn't just grim up north & hot in the south as many posts suggest.)

Exciting though.

The intensity of the rain has caused some sewer overflows, including at Gwithian, where SW Water refuse to except the regular problems.

Are you aware of any public airing/discussion sites for general sewage
problems in the UK?
Near me I'm aware of a major problem with the local sewage works. The
houses near it are below the sea level of even normal high spring
tides, but the main problem is with the works. Replaced storm-drain
outlet flapvalves have helped the marine flooding they used to get. It
seems that in high rainfall/cloudburst events over land , the sewage
works is supposed to handle road run-off of rain , plus house run-off,
but cant. It looks as though to protect its own plant , the motors to
the very large Archimedian Screw lift pumps are deliberately
automatically tripped out. Then that whole area including the periphery
of the sewage-plant floods , from overflowing foul water sewer system,
that then fills the storm-drain system, which at elevated high tides
then can cause more extended problems.

Did you notice any alert from the Met Office for any of you thunderstorms. I didn't seen any issued myself apart from one for the North of England, and yours seemed to produce much more rainfall.

No, in fact there was no prior indication of thunder for any of the 3 storms on the Penzance 5 day forecast page either. I posted this in an earlier thread cocerning the early evening storm, which gave the largest rainfall in Penzance.

"The current storm I've been tracking since 16:00, but obviously not by the MetO who show the current rainfall risk (at 19:00 & 20:00) as 10%. Perhaps they left a nought off, I mean its' a pretty big storm. The 1st thunder was about 18:00, and over the last 30 minutes (19:00 onwards) it's been virtually continuous. "

Locally, there have been some very high totals, and a number of the sewage storm overflows have overtopped. I was going swimming off Penzance today, but there's of lot of diffuse pollution from the runoff.

An area from Redruth to Truro got a lot of rain in the afternoon storm, some place flooded twice, once in the afternoon storm, and again last night.

So 3 major storms in 15 hours, no warning, at the time each one was occuring, no forecast of thunder. This morning at 03:30 the thunder was continuous & almost overhead, yet when I checked, still no thunder forecast. A complete fiasco.

Also, on Breakfast this morning, yesterday's weather was summed up as
being hot and dry in the south with floods and thunderstorms in the
north. As an afterthought, there was a mention of some rain in the SW.

I wonder whether that weird description stems from Carol being in
London, hence the 'hot in the south' description, and the rest of the
team being in Salford, hence 'floods in the north' getting a mention.

It's always tempting to blame this sort of thing on 'presenters'
replacing 'forecasters' but it was always so. Most of my life I've
experienced occasions where I've thought, 'if they can't get the actual
weather right, what's the chance of them getting the forecast right?'
