I have to know what is a 'weather diddie'? As far as Windows 10 is concerned my advice would be to backup and install as others have said. The latest version is what Windows 8 should have been. My Vantage pro works even being plugged into a serial port/USB convertor. Delphi development works for XE6 but not Delphi 2006 so now all my mapping is from Openstreet map. The old Media player was left behind so I still have music but I'm reworking my old Jukebox app to get round the long-term hole that will leave. I may have to write my own photo web album application for my images if Google abandon Picasa. I did read an article somewhere online that said Microsoft were planning to charge by the month or year for the use of the Windows operating system like they do for Office 365, if you unsubscribe I imagine the OS would keep working but you wouldn't get updates or security patches. What I dont like about the way things are going in computing is that you are being forced to use the cloud when local storage has never been so cheap. I don't mind being given a choice, but now its being forced so that they can turn storage of music and images and creation and editing of documents into a web service that they can monetise. Bruce. Bruce, the monthly charge was invented by journalists with nothing better to do than invent stories - the horrider the better. Of course, it may be that MS will go down that path - if they do expect Apple to follow suit. You're not 'forced' to use the cloud, it's easy to use local storage. As for the data going back to MS, this can be changed. However, the targeted ads should be an improvement on having any old stuff sent down to you. Graham D - I believe you can 'train' Amazon to give you ads that are better than what you're getting. Whether MS's ads are better targeted remains to be seen - I hardly get any ads anyway.... |

I'm interested with this as like yourself I have this old PC running 24/7, which must use some electricity over time and the onlt reason is for updating from my WMII every 15 minutes. Can you also upload to WOW? Do you have to connect a monitor to it? I used to have a dedicated home built PC to run all the time for my weather station, sunshine recorder, media server and website uploads etc. Even with an 'energy' efficient power supply unit and restricting the processor and services, it still used around 20 to 40 watts. I toyed with idea of a laptop but all the ones I tested used around 30 watts. Then I discovered a netbook called Asus Eee PC which had an Atom processor and was fanless. I bought a second-hand one off Ebay for £60 and I now use that for all the weather stuff, and as a media and VPN server. It works flawlessly with Windows 8.1 and can run for months (I suspect years) without me having to touch or reboot it. I can log in remotely from anywhere to access files or even use remote desktop from the internet. It uses around 5 to 10 watts. With only 1GB of RAM I have installed a 16 GB class 10 SDHC memory card and set it as ReadyBoost memory. That works a treat and speeded everything up immensely. I have had it running now for nearly 3 years and it has never crashed, faulted in anyway. It has worked better than I had imagined and only uses the tiniest amount of electricity. It has a 2TB USB drive attached where I store all my music, photos etc and also the HTPC records all its programs to it. Using the VPN I can access this from the internet. Having an upload internet speed of 10 Mbps helps. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

I did revert. There were so many bells and whistles that I would never use and the absence of Windows Media Player, which I use quite a lot, just didn't make it worth 'upgrading'. This, coupled with the fact that I was all set to replace motherboard, memory, CPU and graphics card, clinched it. One step at a time. Windows Media Player is still there in Windows 10. It is the rather excellent Windows Media Center that is missing so I won't be upgrading my media computer in the lounge. I've tried Linux alternatives but they've never worked as well or looked as good as WMC. Shame as I like Windows 10 and it runs faster than Windows 7 on my very old laptop. You just have to uninstall or disable all those 'apps' that I don't/never need but that only takes a few minutes. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

I find growing up is highly overrated and to be avoided at all cost. Half of the e-mails I get from Amazon contain well-targeted and sometimes useful contents but the other half are just ridiculous. Yes Bruce, I heard a while ago that you could "train" Amazon but found it didn't work in practice. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks.
