My question: WIll this be a clean install and wipe everything else off? Firefox/Thunderbird, Office, and all my little weather diddies? Thanks The thing to remember is to ensure that your PC is up to date with all its patches and that it doesn't have any issues. Many problems have been caused because the user hoped that upgrading will fix them. Will's advice about sfc/scannow - do it first. There is a possibility that the upgrade will fail. However, there is an alternative - see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...n-tool-install if needed. And backup first! Yep good advice, I forgot I installed several hours worth of updates for 8.1 before upgrading. Upgrading (as opposed to a clean install) always carries some risk in my experience. However, at least the revert option is there if things go wrong, so the easy option might be to go with the flow & revert if the flow gets rocky! Graham Penzance |

Updating to Windows 10 is supposed to remain free at least until 29th July next year, so there's no rush. Hopefully most of the bugs will have been removed by then (there are bound to be some). Microsoft have said that 10 will be the last version of Windows; after this there will just be updates. Windows 7 is supposed to carry on receiving bug fixes until 2020, including the important security-related ones, but there's no guarantee that updating to 10 will still be free by then. There's been concern expressed that Windows 10 sends an awful lot of info back to Microsoft about what the user is doing, perhaps to allow adverts to be targeted more precisely (apparently even Solitaire comes with adverts in Windows 10). Some of this info-sending can be switched off, apparently, but some can't. -- John Hall "Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger." Do be aware that the default program for opening specific file types may get
reset to the various Microsoft-supplied options. eg HTML pages started opening in MS Edge by default now rather than Chrome, at least on my Win10 upgraded PC. Not a big deal, but a bit irritating to have to reset everything manually to my own preferences. |

I suppose it's all part of a now clear policy to try to get everyone onto one version, so they don't have to provide updates to multiple versions, currently 7, 8, 8.1, Vista & XP. The fact is that after a few years of updates the cumulative difference is likely to be as great as between some previous versions, but at least there will only be 1 'version' to update. Edge is the new browser that comes with Windows 10. Of course if you prefer Chrome or Firefox or whatever, you can carry on using them.) -- John Hall "Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger." There were so many bells and whistles that I would never use and the absence of Windows Media Player, which I use quite a lot, just didn't make it worth 'upgrading'. This, coupled with the fact that I was all set to replace motherboard, memory, CPU and graphics card, clinched it. One step at a time. -- Alan White Mozilla Firefox and Forte Agent. If it's like Amazon, the answer will be "not very". According to the targeted mail I get from them, they must think I'm a 12-year-old girl who, amongst other things, owns, drives and maintains a Peugot 205; is a body-builder, and is interested in male facial grooming products. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks.
