Snow shower Wembury
I could not believe my eyes.
A brief snow shower at 1110 GMT. Turned to rain though before petering out. And now showers are of small hail. It appears Spring has arrived. Temp varying between 3 and 5C :-( Len Wembury, SW Devon 83 m asl |

Temp varying between 3 and 5C Well I don't call it Spring, it is only 2nd March, Spring up here does not get going until much later in the month, typically around 15th when the first daffs appear. DJF winter is just a convenience. Much of December is definitely autumn for me. Yes thanks. Snowing again here in Haytor and this morning's earlier shower is still on the ground where shaded. Many other times I have seen it the other way round which makes more sense as the precipitation and cloud dynamics usually lowers wet bulb and dew point of the surface air, preparing the way for snow. Cloud dynamics must have been different on this occasion. Len ----------------------------------------------------- |

Temp varying between 3 and 5C :-( That reminds me of 2008 when, after a mild and snowless winter it snowed on the 6th of April, though it didn't settle. And April is a proper spring month. Today's weather was particularly unpleasant at another site meeting in Dunkeswell. Being hit in the side of the face by horizontal, high speed hail/sleet/wet snow is not my idea of a gorgeous day! :o) Abandonment to a warm office to thaw out was the only option and then back to the tropics of home. A relatively mild 8.6C and over 8 hours of sunshine at home and just one brief shower at around 14:00 makes it a world away (and only 15 miles). -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

I'm wondering if at these site meetings you ever get any work done unless it is 30C and sunny? :-) A relatively mild 8.6C and over 8 hours of sunshine at home and just one brief shower at around 14:00 makes it a world away (and only 15 miles). Quite an altitude difference though? I was in Newton Abbot yesterday morning (near sea level) and it was snowing (just), then the sun came out and I overheard comments about "weird weather" and I thought, no "just typical wintry showers". I did think of pointing out the fantastic skyscape but thought better of it. The strength of the wind here helped prevent much rise intemperature. Hail & thunder in the early hours of today, min of 4.2C. Unlike yesterday, the recent showers have been mainly rain, rather than hail. Graham Penzance |
