And ISTR it was strictly soft hail at about lunchtime rather than proper snow. I was on my way to an afternoon exam at the time. -- Regards, Martin Brown |

Snow also fell across E Anglia, settling not only on roofs and grass but a witness told me that roads and pavements were also covered in the centre of Bury St Edmunds. He estimated the depth at 2" but, as this was from a first floor viewpoint, this cannot on its own be regarded as too reliable. However, when I was travelling along the old A45 through Suffolk, a while after the snow had ceased, there was still snow lying on roofs and grass which suggested to me that the estimate was not far adrift from reality. Before the start of the snow - large flakes of it - in Rushden, Northamptonshire, there was a short burst of hail which, if it had occurred in Bury, could have assisted the snow to settle on the roads. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. Regards, Martin Brown Yes, and it made the headlines for about 48 hours or so, with typical tabloid over-hype, but was soon virtually forgotten as pressure rose rapidly and within 7-10 days we enjoyed temperatures of around 28C. |

It most certainly was a weekday - I was at school, the sky darkened and snow fell - most definitely snow. This was at Tupton, near Clay Cross, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. S45 *** Being 14 at the time, we school kids were astounded at the weather and I think that is when my interest first took hold.
