It does appear that this pattern is going to continue, in fact gfs has
shown this happening a couple of days earlier that it was two days
ago, so there seems to be some consistency in it's probability. The
ensemblies at that range can't make there mind up between another
northerly or easterly, high pressure in two completely different
areas, Greenland or Scandinavia.

Is the last week of the year just going to be another *suckers gap*,
it certainly may prove to be the crucial point of the winter which
sets the scene for 2011.

Just waiting for 18z run, to see if it's still showing up.

I think any breakdowns in the blocking set-up are going to be short-
lived and just add to snow levels. We're stuck with this till March.

The winter really began at the end of December. After that, at least in
the south, repeated cold, snowy spells of a week or two were
interspersed with brief thaws. I believe that on many occasions the thaw
never reached regions further north.

The first winter I remember, though my memories are very sketchy. I
was living in Cheshire at the time, and remember a forecast of heavy
snow on around Dec 30th, which actually fell during the morning of New
Years Day. I then remember a slushy thaw on the first Saturday of the
new year, followed by a foggy weekend, though which weekend that was,
I'm not sure.

Memories of the rest of the winter are very vague, but I do have a
vague memory of snow being on the ground for weeks and weeks later in
the winter - would that be right for the Cheshire area? Then I
remember a cold wet spring.

Then there was just about no snow whatsoever until Dec 1981 (though we
did move down south in summer 79, which probably didn't help...)
