I know this is OT but it is a weather spreadsheet I'm working on, so
can anyone help, please?
I'm quite new to Excel having used works most of the time.
If I set up a formula, for ease I'll say the sum of a row for instance
=SUM(A1:A19) and just fill in the first 5 readings to A5 it does it OK
but any subsequent readings are not automatically added and I have to
click on the results square and enter each time.
Is there a way that the formula should update automatically? I've got
lots on my Met sheet that have to be refreshed each day.
It worked fine in works.

Hi Ken,

The default is to automatically update?? Here is what Excel help says


Click the Microsoft Office Button , click Excel Options, and then
click the Formulas category.
Do one of the following:
To recalculate all dependent formulas every time you make a change to
a value, formula, or name, in the Calculation options section, under
Workbook Calculation, click Automatic. This is the default calculation
setting.
Tip Alternatively, on the Formulas tab, in the Calculation group,
click Calculation Options, and then click Automatic.

Sounds like you have managed to turn off calculate automatic mode so
that a manual update is needed. Should be somewhere under Formulae
Calculation Options (XL2007) can't recall where in previous editions.

A subsitute option should be F9 = recalculate now.

The default in a new blank sheet should be calculate automatic.

Just a bit curious as to why you use Excel? I've used Open Office for years
and am now switching to LibreOffice (same thing but freed from Oracle's
clutches). It may not have all the bells and whistles of MS Office but it
cost me nothing instead of the four-hundred-odd quid of the equivalent
package!

obs in excel.

Still snowing, about 4cm in past hour. Must be approaching 30cm,
allowing for compaction.

Ken, you can export spreadsheets from LibreOffice in Mickeysoft's non-
standard format if necessary. Many governments dumped MS in favour of
OpenOffice years ago. UK behind the times as usual. Perhaps they might
finally get around to it now to save some dosh. And switch to Linux as well.
