As some of you may know he had lung cancer and although he had one lung removed, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy last year, another tumour had developed fairly recently. This had caused swallowing and breathing problems and a week or so ago, he had a stent put in his throat to ease the pressure and help his breathing. Sadly, after this he developed pneumonia and it proved too much for him. He died on Tuesday, his family all with him at the time.. The funeral is tomorrow and he will be buried with his first wife Wendy. I have today spoken with both Liz, his wife and his son Jamie and they asked that I let you all know. I am not usually subscribed to this group these days but will pass on any messages to the family from here or if anyone wishes to email me. * * * Just wanted to pass on my condolences to Mike's family. I shared quite a few emails with him in recent years and he shared with me and others, with quiet warmth and pride, the news of his re-marriage and his daughter's wedding as well as the daily passing weather. A knowledgable, true gent - there aren't many left these days. Richard |

From the very beginning I discovered this Group, Mike was so very helpful in answering the various queries I had - many no doubt ridiculously simple to one as experienced as he - in a quiet, factual and gentle way. He never made me feel foolish, though I might well have seemed so, and he was unstinting with his time. I looked forward to his posts and the personal e-mails I did receive from him, over the years. They were always a true mark of the man: Concise, factual, informative and hugely generous. He never became involved in backbiting and he used this newsgroup as was always intended it should. I will miss him. If you will allow me to join with you all in our shared sense of loss. And with my deepest sympathies to Mike's family and friends, - Tom Blackmore, SW Essex |

That is such sad news Mike was such an intelligent man and a true gentleman. He always had time for all sorts on this NG and I've never read a nasty or negative post by the man, in fact he was part of the fabric of this NG and represented all that good about decency and behaviour. I have to say the sad news has brought a tear to my eye. Goodbye Mike I never met you but received the occasional email it's almost a cliché nowadays but you will be sorely missed. Bye Mike. |

wrote: I am so very sad to tell you that Mike died on Tuesday... I am very sorry to learn of this sad news but thank you for letting us know. I always read Mike's interesting and often informative posts and I recall in particular how helpful he was to me when, some years ago, he learned of my "missing" DWRs from the 1962/3 winter. He went off and scanned the lot for me, something that must have taken him a very long time and for which I will always remember him with gratitude and a smile. He was a nice bloke was Mike, I will miss him. -- Dave Fareham |

At a time like this it was good of his family to think of letting us know. Thank you for passing on the news. -- John Hall "I don't even butter my bread; I consider that cooking." Katherine Cebrian |

Poor Mike.
I had no idea he had been ill, battling with cancer. I enjoyed his regular posts to this newsgroup, and as everybody has said already, he will be sorely missed. _____________________ Nick Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Was it last year when he posted those photos of the hill climb he managed on the west coast of Ireland. Have I got that right? The thing that comes through with all the posts of condolences is just how knowledgeable Mike was but with no hint whatsoever of ego or superiority, why he even spoke to me and always in a nice patient way. Of course there are others on the group who are like Mike and I always feared one day that as time passed by we would learn of the passing of someone who in a way we got to know. Sad fact of life but this NG was all the richer for someone like Mike. I have to say its affected me more than I thought and I suspect most here are saddened tonight. |

wrote: I am so very sad to tell you that Mike died on Tuesday. I am very sorry indeed to hear this. Mike was a mainstay of the NewsGroup for many years. He always displayed goodwill towards others and one sensed in him a modesty that is the sign of real knowledge and expertise. Many of us suffered with him when his first wife died tragically a few years ago. We shared his happiness when he remarried some time afterwards. We may remember the courage, dignity and humour he showed when telling us of his illness just a few months ago. I feel it has been a privilege to make his acquaintance, even if only in cyberspace. Sincere sympathy to Mike's family and friends. Colin Youngs Brussels |
