9th February 1991 in Leeds and Bingley
On this date we had 25cm of snow on the outskirts of Leeds (Farsley ) with
drifts of over 90cm (3 feet). In contrast Bingley had 51cm of level snow and 8 foot drifts. The snow that fell on this date is the greatest depth to have fallen in this area over the last 25 years. I doubt whether we will see the same tomorrow. Currently my snow depth is 6 cm, but some parts of Leeds, particularly to the North and South have depths of around 12cm. Snow grains have just started to fall here at 1600 and the temperature is 1.1C Dew point -2 C. Rob 110m above sea level. |

Rob I remember 1991 snow event and the build up I was living in north Leeds at the time. I remember the snow showers starting on the wednesday everning as a bitting easterly kicked in. As the wind turned north easterly the showers became heavier and more frequent during the thursday but continuous snow fell overnight into friday giving some of the deepest snow I had seen. I remember measuring 50cm of level snow over the weekend. One thing though the buses kept running and we did not run out of grit in fact the plough came through my estate early on the saturay morning. Only thing similar about this cold spell seems to be how long it is lasting, though I hear there is more snow up in Leeds than down here in Sheffield. Simon S (South Yorkshire) |
