Fife, high rainfall, flooding etc.

.... Listening to the traffic reports on BBC Radio 2, sounds as if Fife
is once again suffering:-

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/...st/7557834.stm

The rainfall total for Leuchars in July (ex CLIMAT report, subject to
amendment) was 106 mm, representing over 200% of the LTA 1961-1990.

The rainfall for this month so far (using the 0600Z SYNOP reports/7
gps), if I've added them up correctly, is running at 144 mm, and this
looks to be ~230% of the LTA for the *whole* month of August. June was
also wetter-than-average, though the anomaly was 'only' 116% (using
the RMS WxLog).

Rainfall last 7 days: 116 mm & last 24 hr (to 06Z this morning) was
31.6mm.

Martin.

It certainly has been very wet around here. I'm on course for my
wettest ever August. 110 mm in the last fortnight alone.

I've noticed we're 10-20% drier (does that make sense?) than
surrounding locations. I assume we're just a little bit more sheltered.

Martin, I have 105.6mm for July (at Leuchars), but 'only' 122.9mm
for August to 09z today. There may well have been a lot of rain
between 06z and 09z on the 1st resulting in double accounting!
Leuchars' August record stands at 213mm as recently as 2004
(records began in 1922). Boulmer/Acklington established a new
monthly record in July (from 1946, I think) and is just over a
third of the way to its extant Aug record of 199mm (1956).

The shortage of sunshine in central and southern Scotland for the
summer quarter is approaching noteworthiness too ...
Eskdalemuir 98h in June, 109h in July and just 16h in Aug so
far; and Edinburgh/Gogarbank 139h, 101h, and 30h respectively.
(Usual caveats about change from CS recorder to KZ sensor).

.... I'm sure you're right the I only have the 06Z SYNOPs available
.... the NCMs will give a better total, and one that will be checked as
well, as Leuchars still has full professional manning.

Thanks for the other info.

Martin.
