I think the question has been asked before, but would someone kindly
translate the precipitation colours box.

Most of theprecipitation isgreen. Occasionally there is a red inner core
(hail?) Blue - ? I've seen some in the last week so I doubt its snow!
Any help appreciated.

... as already noted, Schauer und Gewitter = shower or thunder (I think
the strict translation for thunderstorm in german is "Gewittersturm".);
this would imply the condition suitable for hail (Hagel).

... Schneeregen = I interpret to be sleet ('snow and rain'), though
again, in my meteorological glossary that gives such, the terminology is
"Schnee und Regen gemischt", or snow and rain mixed.

... Regen und Eiskoerner = rain and ice grains (literal), though it may
include ice pellets; not sure about that. I assume it *doesn't* include
hail, as that would be implied in the "Schauer und Gewitter" category
(see above).

... Im Bergland Schnee = snow in mountain areas/region.

... Eiskoerner = As above, ice grains (possibly pellets from layer
cloud).

... Schnee = snow. Wouldn't have thought that would turn up in the
London file, but might have done further north.

... Regen = rain.

... Gefrierender Regen = Freezing rain.

... Fester Niederschlag in Fluessigwasser aequivalent = (roughly)
equivalent rainfall / liquid water equivalent (for ice-based PPN) total
of precipitation.

Colin Youngs is on leave over this weekend, so he may be able to correct
/ amend or tweak these when he returns.

As far as I'm aware the red bit refers to convective (as opposed to frontal)
precipitation, which, as Martin mentioned, is labelled as showers or
thunderstorms.

If you look at the high-resolution GFS output for Europe on the
Wetterzentrale website, you'll see convective rainfall is marked using red
dashes on the precipitation charts.

.... no, correcting myself (after consulting a better reference
dictionary), 'Gewitter' *is* sufficient = thunderstorm.
