I'll be brief, but over the last few months I have posted about numerous
computer issues from 'blue screen crashes' to installing SATA drives and 'Flat Screen Monitors', all an expensive excersise. The SATA drive was an attempt to see whether it was a Hard Drive / IDE cable / MoBo fault, that the MS Error messages were suggesting. (Treat these messages with a pinch of salt). I successfully installed the SATA drive over a week ago, after some initial complications due to my lack of understanding. A new install of Windows XP Pro, and within a hour a 'blue screen' crash / reboot. Also various programmes continued to have faulting modules and closing down with 'send error message to Microsoft' etc, before closing. (Firefox / Thunderbird / Excel / Wordpad and more). Only a reboot would get them to work again. I joined the Abit forums over Christmas and after a day stumbled on this 'Blue Screen' thread. http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=98805 Without anything to lose I made the suggested changes to the DRAM and have had these manually set since Monday. Since then, NO Crashes, No Faulting Modules, and I've even got the Network and Printer sharing working properly now. So if anyone has a simalar problem it maybe worth making a note of this fix. Thanks to all who have replied to my posts either on usw or by e-mail. Fingers crossed this post won't put the mockers on it ! My next task which has been put on hold since last summer due to this is to start to have review of my website that I have a million and one ideas to improve it. This may take some months :-) Now what did I do with my copy of dreamweaver? Thanks -- Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net |

I would reccomend Win2000 Pro to any windows junkies, 95 98 or ME upgraders, or XP downgraders. Linux and BSD (OS X) are OK too. |

It's taken me 6 months to get this computer working properly, I'm not going to start changing things quite yet ;-) Plus it's still early days, although things do look promising for the moment :-) -- Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net |

I don't know why everyone is gong on about the OS when Keith's problems seem to have been caused by an incorrect BIOS setting. In my experience Windows XP has ben completely reliable both on my home computers and the one my wife uses for work I have known an upgrade to Windows XP from Windows 2000 reveal a buffer ovrflow bug in an application but the OS can't be blamed for that.
