Brussels at least dry - but not much sun by

Brussels on Monday 6th October
Overcast and damp at first after overnight rain but some breaks in the
cloud in the western sky by mid-morning. No real clearance all day
however – just patches of blue visible in the Sc. Sunny intervals
for a short while mid-afternoon. Light W wind backed SW to S in the
afternoon.

Why 1961-1990? by

Is there a reason why the MetO still use 1961-90 for 'normal' weather?
( www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/2008/september.html as an example )
As I understand it the 30 year period was brought into use as it is
long enough to produce an average which can be considered 'normal',
without being unduly outdated by climatic change. Surely the most
recent 30 years should be used?

the earliest on record here (1990), narrowly beating 8 Oct in 1990,
but has been as late as 14 Dec in 1994. The weekend rainfall event
total was a very modest 9.3mm.

Dull, wet and windy all day. Rain mostly light in the morning but
moderate in the afternoon and fairly heavy for a time in the
evening. Fresh SSW wind backed S during the late afternoon.

At 0600Z today, the air temperature stood at +15.5C,
the highest of the month so far and would be quite high
at 0600Z on a July morning. At 0600Z yesterday, we
had a ground frost with the air temperature at +2.8C.
Stepping outside, the relative warmth is palpable as
