Building on flood plains by
MichaelJP
There is currently a lot of talk about this for obvious reasons, but haven't
humans always developed these areas over the centuries? Towns spring up
typically at important river crossings and estuaries, so usually a flood
area as well. Flood plain areas are also flat and easy to build on.
Surely this isn't going to change and we're going to migrate to the hills?
Isn't the answer in more...

Hats off to Mr Corbett by
Richard Dixon
Dear All,
He thorough annoys me most of the time, but on this evening's "BBC Flood
Special" he spoke about the jetstream, it's unusual position, why it's been
giving all the wet weather, and where it would be in a typical summer. It's
the sort of thing I've seen time and again on the Weather Channel and so
refreshing to see.
Further to Martin's email, maybe we are ready for the Jetstream,...

interesting slant on rainfall by
flybywire
Climatologists are building evidence that crops, particularly corn, are
driving up dew points as they put water into the atmosphere through
evaporation. They also may make corn-growing areas cooler and alter rain
patterns.
Some say the extra moisture could even add energy to thunderstorms, with one
study arguing that a 2001 tornado in Benson got a power boost from corn
evaporation.

flood plain building by
Jack (jack.harrison@gmail.com)
No one seems to have mentioned the obvious idea of constructing
buildings on "stilts".
A quick Google search brought these examples:

Penzance - Wettest 24 hours of 2007 by
Graham Easterling
30.8mm of rain in Penzance in the 24 hours up to 18:00 yesterday.
I realise this isn't much compared to recent events, but it is the
wettest 24 hour period in Penzance this year. It was split equally
over 2 of my normal 24 hour recording periods (09:00-09:00). Up until
this rainfall amounts over recent days have been very smalll.

[WR] Rainfall S.Essex and Kent by
Dave Cornwell
Although not quite in the severe weather warning region there was 11mm of
rain here during the late afternoon and evening. Judging from the radar
parts of Kent must have had more. Fortunately it has fallen in an area which
is still relatively dry and not in the West Midlands.

Temperature contrast by
Ian Bingham
I notice that in Ancona, on the Italian Adriatic, the temperature at 0700
CET was 28C and seems to have been similar for much of the night, while here
in NE Scotland it is so cold that we are having the central heating on in
July. No wonder there's a jet-stream over the top of us with that
temperature contrast. Given the moisture feeding in from a
warmer-than-usual North Atlantic acting on such...

Today's model interpretation (24/07/07) by
Darren Prescott
Here is a summary of the NWP output for 12z on Saturday.
Issued 0519z, 24th July 2007
There are signs of a change on the way. The weekend will see low pressure
and rain clearing eastwards, followed by a ridge from the Atlantic. The jet
stream will head north and there should be a few largely dry, sunny and warm
days across much of the UK next week.

It good to get my feet back on teracotta: John Prescott by

You couldn't make it up. After seeing remarks elsewhere relating to building
homes on arrears that are easily flooded -just plain mad- and a post about
John Prescott ; I just had to mention this.
Story from yesterdays Telegraph:

local council admitted that its properties were not...

My July mean temperature is currently at 15.4C, the same for June 2007.
Min Max Mean
July 11.4C 19.4C 15.4C

I wonder how many times in the past has June ended up being warmer than

OT - Flooding in China by
Col
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20070722/tts-uk-china-floods-648bc60.html
Kinda puts our flooding problems into perspective.
We think airlifting over 100 people is a big deal, how about
over 100 dead?
And to my knowledge this hasn't even made it to the TV news.

Maintenance of drainage systems by
Tom Bennett
Looking at the latest reports of flooding started me wondering how many of
the incidents (excluding those from rivers bursting their banks and people
ending up with metres of floodwater coming into their homes) were due to
ill-maintained drains and gulleys, already been mentioned in the Press, and
whether the general drive to conserve water may now be having an effect.
All drainage systems...

[WR] Summer returns in the central lowlands by
Alex Stephens Jr
First day of the month to record over 70ºF here, I feared we might not reach
the seventies all month.
Lovely day, third warmest of the year in Wishaw as it stands.
Such a welcome change from the torrential rain I experienced in Birmingham
on Friday.
Mind you up here it's only been slightly cooler and wetter than average all
month - but very dull, just like...
