[OBS] Romsey - Wednesday 18th January 2012 by Nigel Paice[_3_]
A misty, murky and mild morning with drizzle. Dipped into fog 0945-1100Z (lowest vis 400m at 1020Z) but it won't be recorded as a day of fog because it didn't occur at 0900Z, such is the quirky nature of statistics. The earlier mix of rain and drizzle turned to drizzle alone, stopping by 1130Z. Marked improvement in the visibility during the last hour from 700m to 7km and the cloud is now...

USW's FAQs - thank you by gb
Just a note to thank those who maintain usw's FAQ page. Always something interesting buried in there and the idiosyncratic style is delightful. Off topic - the FAQ pages contain some wonderful poetry. The following weather phrases sound like the names of butterflies or fishing lures. When combined, these phrases might make for some odd weather. They might also make an exciting detective...

No such thing as bad weather by Graham P Davis
In a recent interview, David Hockney said he was annoyed with weather forecasters saying the weather would be bad. He quoted John Ruskin: "Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather." -- Graham Davis, Bracknell, Berks. Today's model interpretation (18/01/12) by Darren Prescott[_4_]
Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Sunday. Issued 0453, 18/01/12 The models are split again today, but in the opposite direction from a few days ago. ECM paints a zonal picture, with low pressure persisting to the north and winds from a westerly quarter from Sunday onwards. GFS, meanwhile, shows the jet moving further south with much colder westerlies and, eventually,...

Revenge of the GFS by Lawrence13
ECMFW , Srat warming and the rest, if you fink you're 'ard enough come and 'ave a go. Yes revenge is a dish best eaten with mild westerlies.. What a slaughter. Not a pretty sight as the Mighty American Model humbles the Europeans.

Still warm January:) by Graham
After a few cold days and some frosty nights my mean is back down below the record set in 2007, but for how long:) As it stands as of today it's the 6th warmest since 1960, with a very mild day forecast for tomorrow. Looking zonal again after a short rather cold spell this weekend. 2007 - 5.6c 1983 - 5.4c 1975 - 5.3c 1990 - 5.3c

Otter Valley, Devon - Cold, cloudy start then warm sunshine by Nick Gardner
It was a raw, finger numbing start to the day here in the Otter Valley with temperatures struggling. Then the clouds disappeared, out came the sun and a lovely afternoon followed. With just a slight breeze it felt warmer than the max of 9.2°C. Overnight low was -1.1°C making it the coldest night since the 18th December (-1.4°C). Though by the time I got up (08:30), the temperature was...
