Lee wave - surface impacts NE England by
Martin Rowley
... showing up well on this series from Teesside (EGNV) airport (latest
at top): the third group is the surface wind, and the following group in
the top three are the variations: note the 040V250 of the 0950Z ob; wind
varying from 040 deg (i.e. from NE) to 250 deg (i.e. from WSW)
underneath a theoretical gradient flow of 270deg (or from the west).
Quite tricky for a/c on approach I would...

Air Frosts 2004 - Penzance by
Graham Easterling
Just 4 air frosts this year, 2 in January, 1 in February & 1 in March.
(There were no air frosts at all in 2002.) The average for the 12 years
1992-2004 is just 6.6. Still waiting for the first air frost this winter,
and there is certainly sign of it.
Sea temperature off west Cornwall still around 11.5 degrees.
Plenty of daffodils out now. www.easterling.freeserve.co.uk/Daffs.html

Sea-level flow indices December and February by
Philip Eden
I've now added these ... they can be accessed directly,
typos permitting, at
www.climate-uk.com/indices/12.htm and
www.climate-uk.com/indices/02.htm
Interesting to note that the unprecedented surge of
westerliness in February from the late-1980s is still
close to its peak in 1995-2004, whereas December
has just about reached its lowest level of westerliness
in over 130 years.

Helen, Helen... oh dear oh dear. by
Dave Ludlow
At 2:56 pm BBC News 24 finished a chilling report about the thousands
of messages left on the beeb website, mostly full of doom and gloom
from or about people who lost their loved ones in the sunami. It was
presented in genuinely sombre mood and immediately afterwards, they
handed over in an entirely appropriate way to Helen Willets for the
weather.
Cue Helen, all bouncy, bright and breezy -...

1947 that WAS a winter (Yorkshire) by
ROBERT BROOKS
I came across this old newsaper cutting I have kept - an article written by
Frank Metcalfe - Yorkshire Evening Post weatherman of that time back in
1987. May be of interest to some on this ng.
The weather forecast on January 27th 1947, was quite simple. It said
"occasional snow". Four days later, furious blizzards had brought Britain to
a virtual standstill and villages on the Yorkshire Wolds...

[WR] Gale Copley (lee slope effect?) by
Ken Cook
Is the current gale in Copley another lee slope gale or does it cover a
wider area? Anyone else getting it?
Mean speed for the past hour 2020Z-2120Z 35kn (F8). Highest 10min speed
37kn(F8) at 2050Z-2100Z.
I hope it's a Pennine wave, a couple of hours and it will be gone.
Otherwise a restless night is on the cards!

For Michael McNeil by
Dave.C
I, like other decent human beings, am desperately upset by the effects of
the Tsunami in Asia. I will donate in my own way without your views, thank
you. I normally ignore arguments and personalities on this NG but I will
make an exception in your case. You are and always have been an ignorant,
obnoxious bigot and as such I hope you will go away.

Today's model interpretation (30/12/04) by
Darren Prescott
Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Monday. Issued 0602z,
30/12/04.
There's little change in the outlook with things still looking zonal for the
forseeable future. The GFS shows a fair amount of sub-528dam air over
northern Britain though, which could lead to a fair amount of snow over the
Scottish mountains.
