How low can it go? by
Tom2131
-9.5C at the moment, after dropping steadily through the evening, and
still falling. Lowest minimum of the winter here, so far. Probably
THE coldest night I'll get this winter, I think.

Northerly more definite next week by
Eskimo Will
Now looking like a major change of type going into next week.
Clue is in the T+120 FAX issue today 8/2/12. Note the strong warm advection
west of Greenland at about 53 degrees west. 24 hours later (on Monday) we
will then start to see a Miles extension or plunge of deep cold air just
east of the meridian in an arctic northerly. This change of type will be
most noticed in Northern Ireland...

[WR] Northampton 11/2/12 - BLOODY COLD! by
jbm[_5_]
2:22am. Temperature here has just hit -10.0C. Previous low was -9.6C on 7th
Dec 2010. And it is still dropping like a bomb, and shows no sign of
levelling off in the near future.

More snow tomorrow for the SE? by
Eskimo Will
Looking at the FAX charts we have yet another warm front coming in from the
north on Sunday.
Could give another inch or so top up over the very cold slab in the SE.
Possibly some drizzly snow further west but might simply just introduce
milder conditions and drizzle here.

[WR] Haytor 11/2/12 (Back into the freezer) by
Eskimo Will
Well the pattern repeats. We have been on the edge of mild/cold air for a
while now and now again we are back into the deeper cold air.
0930
Min -3.2C. Currently -2.1C with a light easterly wind.
8/8 SC cloud cover all night.
Ground frozen but not as rock hard as recently.
Looks like a lot of ice higher up with a thin snow cover.

Mathsy question (sorry!) by
Liam Steele[_2_]
I know this forum is populated by various people with meteorology
backgrounds, so thought I'd ask here first...
For my PhD I am assimilating data into a general circulation model. Now
what I want to do is compare the assimilation result (a simple lat-lon
plot of whatever) with a lat-lon plot of the observations.
I can simply subtract one from the other to get a difference plot, but I
was...

Zonal at T240, or a cold northerly.? by
Dawlish
ECM 12z is looking decidedly zonal without the northerly next weekend
that has been suggested. However, there is a different, colder,
northerly solution presented by the gfs.
Much more of a spread on the ensembles than there has been for a few
days. Little agreement, or consistency after the 18th.

Today's model interpretation (11/02/12) by
Darren Prescott[_4_]
Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Wednesday.
Issued 0450, 11/02/12
The latter half of the working week will see relatively mild NW'lies over
the UK giving way to westerlies as a ridge collapses in our vicinity. The
end of the week looks zonal, with rain spreading across many northern parts
of the UK and with temperatures close to average for all.
Analysis and evolution to T+120...
