Expert opinion.... is this it for decent winter weather? by
nick150971@yahoo.co.uk
The indications for the next two weeks seems very depressing.... both
warmer and wetter than normal it seems, yet again (see 1988, 1990,
1993-95 inclusive, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004). Often a change of weather
around new year seems to set the pattern for the rest of the winter. So
is it time to dismiss the Met Office forecast, forget about winter and
start looking forward to spring?

Just Plain Awful! by
Col
The 1cm snow cover I had overnight is now disappearing but it
stillo counts as a day with snow cover.
It's cold, it's raw, there's heavy rain with an unpleasant gusty wind
and sloshing through slush on treacherous pavements isn't my
idea of fun.
Mild weather? Bring it on, anything's better than this!
Oh, and there's a hole in my shoe which is letting in water,
letting in water......

A very "normal" winter by
Chris Smith
Gratuitous attempt to say something positive about the weather :)
I have no empirical data to work with, but it seems to me this winter is
shaping up as a much more "normal" one than recent years.
Hereabouts, I don't think we've had more than one or two days since mid
November with a day max in double figures. Even today, in the "mild" air
that the forecasters have been promising us, Marham...

Will it? by
David Mitchell
Will It?
The new snappy name for uk.sci.weather forecasting service.
Will suggested it a while ago so deserves to have his name included and
there seemed a pretty positive response at the time.
In light of recent events I'm fairly certain that we could have provided
much more accurate local updates and interpretations to severe weather
warnings, if nothing else.
Was it just a tongue in cheek...

Snowstorm in Brussels by
Colin Youngs
Brussels on Friday 30th December
Bright for much of the morning - weak sun through altostratus. Gradually
overcast by early afternoon with a fresh and gusty S to SSE wind. Slight
snow from about 14.00 Brussels time.
Snow got going in earnest at 15.30 and a real snowstorm raged for the next
couple of hours or so: continuous moderate snow swept along by the wind.
Snow changed to freezing...

An average January by
Ian Currie
The Frosted Earth forecast for January is as follows:
January 2006
Quite a changeable month with low -pressure systems giving around 20 per
cent above average rain. The month will be about average temperature wise or
even slightly warmer than average so no prolonged frosty spells. Very
changeable first half. Drier later on but some snow from north to north
east winds towards the end.

snowstorms by
Ron Button
Noting how quickly this mini cold snap is disappearing again, got me thinking
about the longevity of similar past events.
There's the usual big buildup from the Met Office announcing a Siberian
blast on the way,the then ensuing North/Norwesterly,and three days later the
change back to the Atlantic stuff....why?.
And another thing ,what's happened to winter Lows moving up the
Channel,giving...

[WR] Snow at 542dam (north Kent) by
Darren Prescott
I think that just about sets a record - it's been snowing here in Leysdown,
north Kent for around two hours now. The temperature's currently 0.4C,
having fallen from 1.5C at 6z this morning.
The end must be near, but going by the GFS upper air charts it's
currently -1C at 850hPa:

[WR] Penzance by
Graham Easterling
After the temperature being in double figures for 24 hours, it's currently
down to 5.3 degrees (09:30). That compares with around 12 degrees at the
same time yesterday, and as cold as it was at the front edge of the rain on
the morning of 28th.
Also 45.6mm of rain in 48 hours ending 09:00, (no longer a dry month) and a
gust of 51mph last night.

Too much vitriol in the prescription please. by
Weatherlawyer
I just read the thread slapping the Met Office.
I am sure that things have changed for the worse since the closure of
many local area offices. On the other hand the move to automation means
that the data for setting up the runs, comes in a lot sooner and a lot
handier.
It's just (and I am guessing) that the local areas when manned,
supplied a moderation that was useful to the men higher up the...
