Thanks. An interesting read.

'"The NAO was probably as negative as it's ever been in the instrumental
record, which goes back to the early 1800s. This was a once-in-a-century
type of event," he told BBC News.'

It may have been a once in a century event in the past but, for all we
know, one effect of GW might be to make it more common in the future.
(Of course it could equally well make it less common. I'm just saying
that saying it's a once in a century event is a little dangerous.)

Oh yes indeed! :-)

Copley is in my top three of places.
SWMBO (the sensible one in our relationship) has other ideas though :-(

Have you considered Braemar?

My top three retirement places (in no particular order) are Buxton, Copley
and somewhere in the Lancashire pennines (possibly around Bolton).

SWMBO (the sensible one in our relationship) has other ideas though :-(

I know. SWMBO has suggested the New Forest, staying in the SW (not too bad
an option) or Sussex Downs.

Arguments ahead I fancy! :-))

The Sussex Downs might not be too bad if you can get up high enough,
though not as good as Dartmoor. As for the New Forest, well the February
1978 snowstorm must have been memorable there. You might be lucky and
get another one like that.

Have you considered applying for the part-time caretaker's
job at the Winter Hill transmitter?
The place is aptly named

But seriously, I think you'd have to go pretty damn high around
these parts to get a snow regime anything like Buxton or Copley.
Try Belmont Village.

Sussex Downs had some good snow on them last winter but in my experience
that is now unusual.
