.... today, at least in our neck of the woods. 36.6C at the moment,
with a strong southwesterly blowing the leaves everywhere. Having had
no appreciable rain here since June, everything's looking a bit
parched. looking forward to a pleasant autumn, and another cold
winter.

Same here in Tarn-et-Garonne- I'm fed up of living a hermit-like existence.
To get anything done without ending up pouring with sweat and exhausted, you
need to get up a couple of hours earlier than usual (if not more), close
the house down as soon as the outside temperature exceeds the inside
temperature, and pray that the 29° promised for tomorrow is not just a
figment of the Met man's imagination; the 25 forecast for Saturday sounds
wonderfully cool!!

Yes, you certainly need to adopt a summer routine and get the onerous
chores done early. I'm usually in the pool at around 07:00 -
wonderful!. Then as you say, close the shutters before the sun gets
to that side of the house. Ours stays nice and cool, being of stone.
Top temperature here 37.1C, but as you say, cooling down a tad for the
weekend.

I'm with Will. You say "you certainly need to adopt a summer routine",
but my idea of the best summer routine would be one that avoided the
south of France in at least the months of July and August.

Smalldoses sounds more like a Spanish Town than French?

Well John there are literally hundreds of thousands going on holiday to
places just like that. Personally I prefer the lilley white skin of a
Jenkins.

You don't need heat to get brown.
I'm brown by end of April most years from being outside and not covering
myself in loads of clothes!
Mind you some say it is rust :-)
