Just been out to try clearing two drain covers in the street. While I
was out the rain rate was 21.18mm/hr @10:34. West Hill is quite steep,
and the water runs off the fields at the top of the hill bringing masses
of topsoil, stones and, at this time of year, twigs and leaves. The
people at the bottom of the hill have a bad time if the drains aren't
kept clear by us further up.

Luckily eased off a bit now.

How are you getting on in EDorset?

I spoke too soon. The latest max rain rate @11:29 is 24.0mm/hr.

The gutter outside the house reminds me of flying over southern India
during the monsoon and seeing the brown rivers in full flood. Here the
water is overflowing the pavement and is well over a metre wide.
Clearing the drain covers is useless in these conditions. Luckily my
frontdoor is up two steps. The pub next door has its entrance level with
the pavement, It's too wet to venture out and see what is happening
there. As GK Chesterton wrote: "And Noah he often said to his wife when
he sat down to dine,/'I don't care where the water goes if it doesn't
get into the wine.'" And that includes the ale too.

.... just (1330Z) come back from an emergency 'grandad cover' for
daughter in law! Plenty of heavy rain - haven't had time to measure
yet, but must be at least 15 mm since 09Z. The Stour is running high
and fast (and dirty-brown), and there is minor road flooding just off
the A31 back into the village.

Martin.
