Kilmarnock had spent a lot on flood defences in recent years and this is the first breach I can recall. Upstream around Galston an area was created to 'store' river water when it reached a certain level. Looks as if this 'reservoir' must be full. |

Here in Shiskine we've had 19.1 mm since midnight, still raining and more to come by the look of things. I expect that it's been heavier on the other (eastern) side of the island. We did the horseshoe from Thundergay up to Fhionn Lochan and then on to Beinn Bhreac and Beinn Bharrain crossing over Allt Gobhlach which was in flood and then to Pirnmill. We went into the cloud at about 1500 ft and and it didn't clear all day .... yet Goatfell was cloudless. A fantastic day, although we were grateful for the GPS in the mist. Had a golden eagle flying over us on the way up to Fhioon Lochan and encountered quite a few deer - stags and their harems! I've never before seen so many deer on the hills between Lochranza and Sannox as I saw on the bus back to Brodick. |

I've never before seen so many deer on the hills between Lochranza and Sannox as I saw on the bus back to Brodick. Paul, now at 8.30pm we've had 24.9mm of rain. We took Sam, our Labrador, down to Blackwaterfoot Beach for a run/swim this morning. The height and speed of the burn running down to the sea by the Kinloch Hotel was something to behold! A year or so back that burn picked up enough water and speed to wash a Friesian heifer out of the fields, down the burn and out into the open sea. We were down on the beach for a walk that day and saw what looked like a killer whale about 300 yards off shore, only to find out as it washed in with the tide, that it was the drowned cow. I don't think people always realise just the power of the burns when they're in spate. I envy you your climb/walk. Health problems prevent me from veering off the flat and horizontal. We see a good number of deer as often as not as we drive over the String to Brodick and the top of the String is a great place for seeing Hen Harriers, etc. Susie Over the water on Arran -- Susie Thompson If you can't stand the heat, don't tickle the dragon! to email me, replace deadspam.com with susiethompson.co.uk |
