High pressure, or an Atlantic breakdown at 10 days? Take your pick. by
Dawlish
After the changing output of the last 36 hours, we're in a period of
real uncertainty towards mid-month. The MetO says this:
"From Monday (15th) until Friday (19th) March the weather becomes much
more unsettled with wind and rain in many western parts spreading
slowly southwards. Temperatures cold at first but near normal later."
It then continues this forecast in a similar unsettled vein past...

[WR] Otter Valley, Devon - 9th March by
Nick Gardner
Sunny right from the start and this lasted through to the mid-afternoon then
cloud (remember them) moved in from the east and put the lid on what was
another gloriously sunny and increasingly warmer day.
A max of 9.5°C after an overnight minimum of 1.1°C, the first night without
a frost since the 4th. Despite the cloud later today there was 7.2 hours of
sunshine and this brings the total up...

Surface Analysis 02/03 February 1991 ? by
Waghorn
A very long shot this I know, but-
I wonder if some one has a UKMO North Atlantic surface analysis for 12
UTC on 3 Feb 1991, or indeed any surface analyses for 02-03 Feb 1991.
This relates to the exceptional extratropical cyclone known as 'The
Greenhouse Low' which produced extreme winds over Iceland.

Wasting Grit by
Simon S
Some dry air during this frosty spell leaving very dry roads yet lots
og gritters out spreading tonnes of rock salt.
Driving down the M1 yesterday everning it was like some sort of dust
storm as all the traffic lifted all the dry salt into the air. Today
has been so dry he even the salt covering the roads they have remained
dry. This seems to be down to dew points of around -6 with air temp

High to go cloudy by
Dave Cornwell
After a stunning few days of true winter sunshine it now looks as though our
HP is going to pick up some cloud and return to the grey cold variety that
has dogged this winter here.

Still uncertainty at 10 days. by
Dawlish
Despite yesterday looking like there was a trend being established,
changes in the ECM 12z stopped the possible agreement and consistency
that appeared to be emerging yesterday and we are back with model
difference this morning. The gfs shows a northerly, then an Atlantic
breakthrough, but it is short-lived and there are hints of high
pressure building at 10 days (and after). The ECM shows...

Cold start to March by
Len Wood
A cold start to March is not unusual. At least, not in this neck of
the woods.
The comments on this ng seem to convey rather short memories.
Both March 2005 and 2006 started cold.
4th and 7th March 2005 min -3.0C
2nd March 2006 min -3.7C.
It was coldest at the start of March 1986, with -5.7C on 3rd.
Perhaps we are just longing for this extended winter to end.

Today's model interpretation (9/03/10) by
Darren Prescott[_4_]
Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Saturday.
Issued 0507, 9th March 2010
A more zonal flow will cover the UK on Sunday and into the beginning of the
working week, with rain likely in the far north and drier, sunnier weather
further south. Beyond that the models diverge, with GFS showing trough
disruption followed by high pressure and ECM showing zonality continuing.

Winter In Sydenham Here Comes My Son by
Lawrence Jenkins
Oh well although some more snow would have been appreciated by me I can't
complain about this winter. Me and my boy were trimming back some trees
today in my garden as a good neighbour does, it was cold and my son started
singing 'Here Comes the Sun'.
It reminded me of when George Harrison wrote that song right at the end of
the sixties when those winters were sure cold and long; that's how...
