Arctic ice third lowest on record - so far. by
Graham P Davis
http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/2010/090710.html
It's also now very close to reaching the second-placed year, 2008.
http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/seaice.recent.arctic.png
The eastern Arctic has been looking very swiss-cheesed, particularly north
of Svalbard and there's an open area at 87N 160W. Not the first time that's
happened, I think it was about four or five years ago...

Historical weather charts by
Reci Divist
Hi all
I am researching climate at the moment and I was wondering if somebody
could point me toward a source of historic charts (North Atlantic,
similar to what used to be printed in summarised form in Weather
magazine back in the day).
Ideally would like to type in a date to get the chart(s) for that day.
Many thanks

Surface - Upper air coupling by
FrenchScotPilot
Hello,
This is my first post.
I was trying to understand the coupling between the conditions at the surface condition and aloft. So far, I got to the following:
- An imbedded short wave disturbs the upper airflow creating cold and warm air advections and intensifying the trough/ridge
- The polar jet stream creates areas of convergence aloft (supplying air to the surface high pressure) and...

Big model differences at T240. Is the ECM out on a limb? by
Dawlish
Quite a difference between the output at 10 days from the ECM 12z -
which models a continuation of the wet and unsettled weather for the
UK and the gfs, which has shown 3 successive runs in which a possible
anticyclonic influence again has grown with each run. Last night, the
JMA was supporting this at T192 and GEM shows high pressure at T240 on
the 00z.
No more than interesting, but the...

no more daily weather forecasts by
mumford
breaking news.
bbc and meto have decided to stop issuing daily weather forecasts.
according to insiders, weather forecasts will only be issued when the
met office think they will be correct.
this will leave the public to fend for themselves when forecasts are not
issued.

Today's model interpretation (8/09/10) by
Darren Prescott (via Google)
Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon (GMT) on Sunday.
Issued 0433z, 8/09/10.
The southernmost areas of the UK will see settled and warm weather to
start next week, with rain further north. The models are split after
that: GFS shows the warm, dry weather spreading northwards while MetO
and ECM show a trough moving across the UK instead. The far south
looks like staying largely dry...

"Uncertain Climate" on Radio 4 by
Norman[_3_]
Some very interesting discussion on the programme this morning (still available
on iPlayer). Good to hear Prof Sir Brian Hoskins stressing the great
uncertainty in future climate predictions. He said that "we" have no idea what
will happen to the Indian monsoon in future and very little idea about how many
summers like 2003 there will be in Europe in future. He clearly has little time
for the...

As you know hurricane name lists are predicted years in advance.
As I ALSO know, this is an earthquake newsgroup, not hurricane.

The demise of the SYNOP code by
Norman[_3_]
I understand that the long-predicted move from alpha-numeric codes such as
SYNOP is now very imminent. The target date for the end of the use of the SYNOP
code is currently 1st Nov 2010. Some countries are struggling to make that date
so there may be a bit of slippage. Currently, the Met Office plans to cease the
transmission of UK observations in the SYNOP code onto GTS on 1st Nov.

Jo *******i is wrong by
Mike McMillan
"In the spirit of transparency, I was wrong about global temp dropping
in August
The global temp DID NOT FALL in August as I had predicted it too.
Whether this a delay of my idea, or denial will be settled in the
spring. In the meantime the .51 was slightly cooler than the .52 in
August of 1998 and means this year still trails the warmest satellite
year on record, 1998"
