Hurricanes and solar radiation by

It would appear the weather in the UK turns murky in October/November
every year. I can't think why I had forgotten this as it is something
that occurs almost ever year and is singularly depressing therefore not
easily ignored. It is also fabled in weather lore and...

A Question concerning california's "mediterranean" climate by
Matthew F. Talbot
My understanding is that California has dry summers because (very
roughly) the pacific ocean is cold at our latitude, which in turn
cools the air above the ocean and makes it more dense, thus inhibing
convection, and more generally fostering high pressure. In winter, it
rains because the air above the ocean is generally cooler than the
ocean, and thus tends to be warmed by the ocean.
My question...

Why does low pressure create heat? by
Derek Fountain
I recently moved from the UK, where I had a basic "user's" level
understanding of the weather, to Perth, Western Australia. Things are a bit
different here. :o)
It took me a while to work out that a "trough" is a long narrow area of low
pressure, sandwiched between 2 areas of high pressure. In the UK, low
pressure tends to arrive in a spinning circle, and a long narrow area was
new to me. I tell...

Monsoons in Arizona by
mary
I notice that the media in Tucson refer to the rains they receive in late
July and August as being monsoons. I lived in Arizona from 1961 to 1973, and
never remember the late summer rains as being referred to as monsoons. Are
they really monsoons, or have the local tourist officials decided to call
them that to increase the tourist trade?
Thanks
Tom
