Thunder and hail here in Branksome Poole about 15:20.
Very slow moving thundery showers.
Heavy rain with some large hail.

A big group of staff gathered to watch a very menicing dark cloud with
rotation that could be seen very clearly.
One member of staff got a lump on his head from a very large piece of hail
approx 12mm diametre.

Heardly a breath of wind. Clouds seem to be forming in situ.

Bozo, I clearly disagree with you over whether trying to avert AGW
reflects "mass hysteria." I think you're lying like hell about that.
But I really was trying to make a bigger point regarding government
and its role.

Peter Franks, judging from his recent post, seems to think that the
first task of government, when confronted with a national emergency
(say, the current meltdown of the financial markets, for example),
should be to reform itself -- to make sure that the government itself
is clean & pure, and never mind about the national emergency.

I'd like to submit, as respectfully as I can, that this is basically a
stupid proposition. Regardless of how one feels about AGW and the
obscenely enormous CO2 emissions of the fossil fuel industries.

The preamble to the U.S. Constitution states that among the chief
purposes of government is preserving and advancing the "general
welfare." It doesn't state that one of the main purposes of
government is the perfection of its own internal purity.

Of course the Free Market fundamentalists disagree, since y'all seem
to look on the "Invisible Hand of the Market" as being close to the
Will of God. [If you're a Christian, Jew or Muslim, I think this free
market worship should count as a kind of "idolatry" -- but hey, who's
counting?]

But most people who pay lots of taxes to the government, although we
grumble about, expect it to do something positive with our damned
money. Right now, a government fix for what ails the financial
markets and the larger economy would be a treat.

For the government to engage in agonies of self-criticism and self-
perfection in order to turn itself into the political equivalent of a
jeweled Russian Easter Egg, a nearly flawless object of surpassing
esthetic appeal, seems pretty much irrelevant.

The first half of the week will see rather cold northerlies give way to a
ridge, then by Thursday milder SW'lies will affect the UK as the ridge sinks
southwards. The outlook beyond that is a generally cool one, however, with
frequent incursions of somewhat cold air from the NW or north.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS
http://85.214.49.20/pics/Rtavn001.png
Westerlies and WNW'lies cover the UK, with complex low pressure over
Scandinavia and a large high to the WSW. The winds strengthen from the WNW
tomorrrow as a ridge builds to the west and on Saturday NW'lies cover the
UK. Sunday sees a weak ridge cross the UK, with WSW'lies.

T+120 synopsis
http://85.214.49.20/pics/Rtavn12014.png /
http://85.214.49.20/pics/Rtavn1201.png
http://85.214.49.20/pics/Recm1201.gif /
http://www.meteociel.fr/modeles/nogapse_cartes.php
The jetstream chart shows a trough to the east and a large ridge to the
west, with the jet heading SSW'wards over Scotland and Northern Ireland. At
the 500hPa level there are northerlies with a large ridge to the west. MetO
also shows northerlies alodt, while ECM has NNW'lies. GEM brings upper
northerlies as with MetO and GFS.
At the surface, GFS brings strong northerlies as a ridge approaches the UK
from the west. The other runs show NNW'lies, again with a ridge to the west.

Evolution to T+168
Day 6 with ECM shows a ridge over Scotland and NNE'lies for the UK. The
ridge sinks southwards over England and Wales on day 7, with SW'lies
elsewhere.
On day 6 with GFS a ridge moves over the UK, bringing NNE'lies to England
and Wales and SW'lies elsewhere. SW'lies affect all areas on day 7 as the
ridge declines and moves SE'wards.

Looking further afield
Day 8 with ECM shows a trough over Scotland and Northern Ireland, resulting
in southerlies elsewhere. The trough makes slow progress eastwards on day 9,
with southerlies in advance and NNW'lies following behind. By day 10 a deep
low lies to the west with the remnants of the trough over Scotland. Winds
are southerlies or SSE'lies across the UK.
SW'lies cover the UK on day 8 with GFS, as a weak trough moves eastwards.
The trough becomes a low over the North Sea and SE England on day 9, with
northerlies elsewhere. By day 10 NW'lies cover the UK as the low moves
NE'wards to Norway.

Ensemble analysis
(http://91.121.94.83/modeles/gens/gra...ille=Lon dres)
The ensembles show a cold outlook now, with a couple of colder days for the
22nd/23rd, followed by a return to a "sine wave" mobile pattern. However,
the sine wave is oscillating around -3 or -4C, rather than the +1 or +2C
that it should be at this time of year.
