I,ve been wanting to write this for some time. My cudos to LaCrosse for
their WS2310 (Weather channel)weather station I don't know if mine is
particularly robust or they all are but this unit has been through four
lightning strikes and is still ticking. The only problem I've had is
SPIDERS, they get in the wind guage impellors and gum up the works and in
the rain guage sensor. they both need periodic cleaning. The uploaer I use
is WUHU, does all I ask is easy to set up and run as soon as downloaded. I
use an older refurbished gateway computer as a dedicated system. all in all
a low cost set up that works and is dependable. No I'm not connected with
any of these products, just a happy camper.

My answer to the computer serial port problem was a belkin serial to usb
cable, this one even has link, trans, rec indicator leds. in fact it cleared
up the old "could not recieve data from console" messages in the log.

Mine has been blown up twice by lightning. Once it took out the base
unit (LaCrosse replaced it on Warranty) the other time it just wounded
the serial port. It works on some PCs, not others. I just put it on
one it likes. I suspect the serial port is running on the 3v end of
the EIA spec and may not be at 100%.
I have ferrites on all the leads now and I am looking into an
opto-osolator for the wiring to the outside unit.
